Hi, I’m a keen archer and have been for many years now, being 17 and having a dad more into fishing than hunting i haven’t been able to go out yet but have a few mates who are interested and will do so ASAP. However, recently when talking to my grandad, we stuck up conversation about it and he was telling me of when he used to go out with his dogs and some mates. This has got me excited about the possibility of taking my dog out wild pig hunting with me.. I got her for my 17th birthday (last december) and she is a 9 month old German Shepherd X Alaskan Malamute. She pretty much looks like a black wolf and isnt what i’d call a small dog even at 9 months.

What i was wondering though, was:
1) What would I have to train her to do, and how would I go about it?
2) What is the usefulness of a dog while hunting pigs with a Compound Bow?
and
3) Is there any type of quality in the alaskan malamute or german shepherd breeding that would play to an advantage while bow hunting?
(i was thinking maybe tracking because she looks like a black wolf, very rarely barks, and prefers to howl so i assume there is a fairly large chunk of wolf in her blood)

My grandad was unable to help as he had a pair of golden retrievers to bring back the ducks from the water that he shot with a rifle.

PS: Will more than likely get a 2nd dog when I move out, probably Rottweiler or Doberman, info on the training and breed advantages also appreciated

GOLDEN RETRIEVER PUPS AKC OFA, CERF heart cert. Light medium. Show look. Extra mild temp. 0.
I have 25 years experience raising pups for beauty, health and an extra mild temperament for excellent family pets. Both parents have a very mild temperament and have been tested for genetic problems common to golden retrievers. We have not had any health problems in our lines including early cancer, epilepsy, heart murmers, allergies, eye problems, hip problems or any other genetic issues. The grandfather was a wonderful dog who lived in great health until the age of 15. These dogs have nice blocky heads and full coats. They are very beautiful dogs and their offspring are also beautiful. They have been vet checked, wormed and 1st shots. All pups come with full AKC registration.

These puppies were born on July 1, 2010 and come from top quality golden retrievers.

The dam (Elle) has a great disposition and loves people and other dogs. She earned a Junior Hunter Title with 4 straight passes. She is a great pheasant hunter and will point birds. She is darker red in color and weighs about 60 lbs.

The sire (Diesel) has one of the best field bred golden pedigrees you will find. His father is TNT’s Explosion and his uncle is Stanley Steamer. Diesel is extremely athletic and loves to retrieve. He has a great disposition and loves everybody. Diesel has earned derby points and is currently working on becoming all-age qualified. He weighs about 65 lbs.

The puppies get socialized every day and we introduce them to many different things as they get older. Before going to their new homes they will be vet checked, have first set of vaccinations and been dewormed.
The puppies are 0. A 0 deposit will reserve a puppy for you.
Thank you

Are golden retrievers good tracking dogs?

My golden retriever won’t fetch so i figure he needs a good activity. Are golden retrievers good tracking dogs, i don’t need him to go find my deer just I shot or anything. I just want him to be able to find things like toys i hide in the woods. I’ve seen on the internet the best dogs for that are bloodhounds, german shepherds, collies etc. But i haven’t seen golden retriever. I have a Golden Ret., a husky and a mutt. I’m pretty sure its the G.R. because they are hunting dogs and huskies are meant to pull sleds but which one has the most potential for tracking and how would i train him to do it?

"I have 2 20 week oln golden retrievers and the still poo and pee anywhere that they want they show no signs of wanting to go they even will pee while drinking. We feed them 3 times a day and they are taken out after each meal but all they doi is lay down ( we have tried putting them outside together and apart but nothing works we have trained two other dogs in the past we no problems and they both where fully house trained at 12 weeks. These two will even pee on their bed, they do not have a favourite spot tp go its anywhere and everywhere that they are at the time, we keep them in the kitchen most of the time and I am here in the kitchen with them nearly all the time and take them out regular but they go out and you can stand there for 15 mins and they will not go, bring them in and they will pee or poo, arrrrrrhhhhhhh!!!!!! Please help
My other dogs where house trained at that age and these 2 are crate trained and do go out at different times. I have had dogs my whole life and have never had a problem before, I was just looking for some ideas that I have not tried before!
After the food they will sometimes not poo for 1 to 3 hours afterwards, we have tried walking them straigh after but have been our for nearly an hour with them and still no poo
I have and do ALL of what you have suggested I take them outside and just stand with them and give the command to toilet which I have successfully used with all my other dogs they are crated trained at night and hold it all night and I am at home nearly ALL day apart from do the food shop and I stay with them in the kitchen all the time so giving the time and effort IS NOT the problem they have been cleared by the vet I just wanted abit of advice as I have tried it all
The breader let them pee and poo in the house and as soon as we got them home we have not let this happen its a habbit that they came with and we have tried everything to break it and I do watch them all day but they do not show the signs like other dogs do to wanting to go they will just get up and by the time I walk them to the back door which is only 3 foot from where they are they a squated but they can hold it all night long so they do have some level of control

Lets say their were 4 adult golden retrievers, could they hunt a deer? These dogs would be tamed and owned. I just want to know if there could be a pack of dogs that could hunt their own food, not wolves or coyotes- domesticated dogs.

Do Golden Retrievers and Cats mix?

I have a 2 year old Golden Retriever called Lily and I’m getting a new kitten in a few weeks, but I just wanted to know do Golden Retrievers and cats mix?

I mean she is daft as a brush but can sometimes be loopy and over powering when she’s excited, she’s never bit any of us, or ever snarled or growled or even barked at us, and shes quite loving, but she’s been an only pet for ages so I’m worried. Especially because whenever there is a cat outside in my yard she runs after it barking and starts whining.

My parents said that my dog wouldn’t hurt a fly. But is there temperaments right to get a cat, because some dogs have prey instincts? i’m not worried worried, i’m sure she’ll be fine if I give equal love and attention, but its still stuck in the back of my mind and I want to make sure I go over everything! my question is do Golden retrievers and cats mix?

Thanks for any nice answers and I hope this made sense.

Old golden retrievers?

I have 2 golden retrievers, they’ve had a great life, both 11 years, but one of them now has bad hip problems. She’s been taken to the vets, and he suggested "metacam" or injections twice weekly.
we went for the metacam medicine option, she’s not in pain at all, just off her food.
the injections seem a bit drastic, i was wondering if anyone has experience of this? and if it works? the treatments very expensive but we’re willing to pay if it would help her. I get the feeling the vet just wants the money.
any other advice on oils or anything for joints?

Golden Retriever?

Hey everyone! Erm I was just wondering, are golden retrievers good pets? Can they still be trainable at 10 weeks? Will they go in their crate or will they keep barking? And also could someone send me a picture of a ten week old golden retriever puppy? I want to know how cute they are! :D
