A crowd of 2000 people were on hand on a cloudy chilly day in Imperial Beach south of San Diego on Saturday, May 22, to watch 60 dogs attempt to out-surf each other at the 5th Annual Loews Surf Dog competition. Each dog had 10 minutes to catch as many waves as possible and the judges scored the top two waves for confidence level, length of ride and overall ability. This years event benefited the San Diego Police Department Canine Unit and the San Diego Police Foundation. Thats a tough ride, especially when youre competing against an 85-pound Bernese mountain dog from Carmel Valley named Nani. Some made it all the way to shore, while others crashed and hit the water, with their owners swimming to their rescue. This years winner: Abbie, an Australian kelpie, clinched the 40-pound-and-under division. The large dog category was won by Stanley, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and the third category, which is tandem
