We were wondering, because it says they were bred to hunt birds.

Yes, my two Goldens would would do that in a heartbeat if they saw one, along with my other dogs. They simply see chickens as prey/lunch that runs. :0)
There are some Goldens out there that won’t go after them, ones that have been trained as a pup to stay away from them, or raised on a farm and is used to them and sees them as family and not prey, BUT even those ones cannot be trusted 100% not to hurt or kill one.
If you have chickens and want a Golden and are worried about him or her killing and eating them, just keep your chickens in a good pen which will keep the dog away from them.
Any dog can and sometimes will kill chickens. Some dont, all depends on what kind of training it has.
Well Golden Retrievers COULD kill a chicken although it is not in their instincts and they are not bred to hunt chickens.
They can eat chicken definitely although if you are giving your dog chicken bones make sure they are NOT cooked because otherwise they WILL get stuck in your dogs throat.
I hope this helped!
no they shouldent they are very intelligent dogs they wont or somthing is rong with him
As long as your dog is properly socialized with the chickens and knows from the moment he gets home that the chickens are not "toys" or "games" then the Golden should be just fine, they are smart dogs.
Depends on how much of a prey drive your particular golden may have. Some love cats, some kill cats. Some don’t care about birds, some chase and kill birds. Most goldens will chase anything that run. Especially younger goldens.
Yes, they could kill a chicken.
It doesn’t sound like you have chickens though! haha!
You were just curious weren’t you. One thing i would say though; if you’re asking because a neighbour has chickens then know that if he gets in that yard, they can kill him if they feel they’re "in danger" or something stupid like that. They’re not allowed to shoot a gun in the proximity of a road but I’ve just heard waaaay too many stories of stupid neighbours. Get friendly with your neighbours, introduce the dog, invite them for pie.
Later neighbour!
Very doubtful, when mine was a puppy he pounced on a baby sparrow gently holding it in his mouth. I miss that dog.
Yes its natural for them but its very easy to break them of it, you just need to discipline your dog when you see him/her doing it if they even do it.
I am ashamed to say it but one of mine did many years ago.
I don’t think she would have thought of doing it had she not been egged on by my Jack Russell at the time. He was the ‘hunter’. We were passing a neighbour’s house and they both went into her farm and actually killed two of her chickens who were wandering around outside. Needless to say I was not very popular for allowing my dogs to enter her land.
We lived in the country miles away from anywhere and I know now that I should have had them on their leash because you can never trust any dog 100% not to kill anything that runs if given the opportunity. It’s their natural prey instinct and once they see a chicken or a rabbit run they are going to take up the chase,
I learned a hard lesson and I would advise anyone who walks their dogs near farm land to always keep their dogs leashed.
Maybe if the chickens had been penned it would not have happened but I think the onus was on me to be a more responsible dog owner.
